Review by: AudioFile Magazine - August 1, 2004
"Vera Williams zooms in on a moment of family difficulty and champions the inner strength of two sisters. In free verse accompanied by colored pencil drawings, Williams introduces Amber and Essie, who find solace in each other and support from the neighbors while their mother works and their father is temporarily away. With two accompanying narrators, Barbara Rosenblat captures the fragility of each sister and balances that with resiliency and humor. The interplay of the three voices makes each poignant vignette immediate and tangible. Who is moving in upstairs? What is a "best sandwich"? Who is standing in the doorway? Listen in and look and be ready to laugh and cry."
Review by: School Library Journal - December 15, 2003
"Vera B. Williams' award-winning book is performed by three women who bring its lyrical words to life. The story follows two young sisters, and is told in unrhymed poetry and song. Each poem reveals a nugget about the girls and their situation. They are each other's comfort as Daddy is in jail and their mother struggles to keep the family afloat. There are gently humorous moments, as well as heartwrenchingly poignant ones. The narrators capture it all, providing voices for each character. They treat each of William's carefully chosen words with the respect it deserves, adding vocal punctuation that is missing in the text, and possibly making this book more accessible to a younger audience. Listeners have time to appreciate the illustrations which, like the text, capture much in only a few lines. Listerners will cherish the sweet treasure."
